Tinned Fish

Authors

hi

Totally not a fish, trust me

Right out of the gate, my goal with this blog is to help light a fire under me when it comes to committing to consistent specialized security learning.

Specialized in what way? Well, I'm a generalist, and there's nothing wrong with that, I would just love to specialize in something that brings an overwhelming sense of value to all people.

I've found this conflicts with my passion to pursue cybersecurity. It really isn't derived from uncovering a big vulnerability or stopping some grandiose attack with devastating impacts like I thought it would be (don't get me wrong, those things are still really awesome and I learn so much from them).

I believe the catalyst that helps me get out of bed is helping people understand the great big world of cybersecurity and seeing it their face light up when I try and pick their brains to find mutualistic and constructive ways of knowledge sharing.

Like a human locksmith, trying to make inaccessible and complicated topics accessible so that other perspectives are introduced into the field to change the playing field entirely for good. Trying to fight against the notion that cybersecurity is parasitic and filled with big egos is what I believe I could be good at.

To do that, I need to be on the cutting edge moving fast, tinkering, breaking more things. Those are the kinds of things that I hope this blog will help me share.

Maybe I'm just crazy and haven't been around long enough to know any better. Or maybe I'm just trying to push against my generalist and sporadic nature to find some way to give back to the world and make my mark. Either way, there's really only one way to find out. My hope is that you'll join me and extract some value or even a bit of inspiration from my writing.

Oh, I also enjoy video games, old tech, and some fish here and there if you couldn't tell.

Tagging Structure

I've thought of a lot of different ways to organize my odd style of writing and get better at it without worrying about unnecessary overhead (ask me how long this modified template of a blog took to create). I think this is the best and most approachable way. I've broken it down into three types of fish for now (which I know not everyone loves).

The categories will be:

  • salmon
    • This is a more approachable, less 'fishy' fish. It will contain some personal writing, high-level cybersecurity topics, and will have a more journal-esque feel to it. This post is a good example.
  • tuna
    • Everyone knows who brought it to the table. Some love it, some can't stand the smell. I'd like to compare it to my writing, but this should help distinguish the more philosophical, theoretical, and opinionated posts. Less approachable but still (hopefully) enjoyed by some.
  • sardines
    • I loves sardines, some are deeply disgusted by the thought of them. Content with this tag will get right down into the weeds and be more geared towards a technical audience. CTF challenge write-ups, homelab development, and pursuit of deep cybersecurity knowledge will use this tag.

Contact

I'm always open to collaborations and hearing from people. Please see my contact policy before doing so.

And that's it for now. I'm still in the process of getting a good workflow put together that will make it easier for me to regularly publish, but for now stay tuned!

Keep on keepin' on out there keyboard cowboy...
